Of the five Army personnel who lost their lives in the terror attack in Poonch, Jammu & Kashmir, two were from Uttarakhand – Rifleman Gautam Kumar (29) and Rifleman Birendra Singh (33). Kumar, who had just resumed duty after a 15-day leave, was looking forward to getting married in March.
Residing in Kotdwar, Pauri Garhwal district, Kumar, the youngest of four children to his parents, had joined the Army’s 89 Armed Corps in the year 2014.
Kumar’s brother Rahul said, “We had an engagement ceremony in Rishikesh in September, this year. The family was eagerly anticipating his wedding on March 11. The news of his death late on Thursday shocked us all.”
