AJMER: A prisoner died under suspicious circumstances while a head constable and a constable were beaten up by two inmates of Ajmer Central Jail on Monday.
It all started when the TV at the cell of high security prisoner Sravan Soni (45) stopped working. Angry, he called head constable and cell in-charge Rajesh Kumar (40), said jail superintendent Suman Maliwal. When Rajesh went there with a constable, another prisoner, Fardeen (27), got out of his cell and both the prisoners attacked the two cops with iron rods.
The cops were badly injured and taken to JLN hospital. Maliwal claimed when a rescue team went to Sravan’s cell later, the prisoner tried to stop him and a fistfight ensued.
“I came to know that Sravan hit his own head with an iron rod,” she said. Sravan was found unconscious on the ground. Finding his pulse weak and BP low, he was taken to hospital, where he died later, she claimed.
Sources said the prisoner’s death seemed suspicious, but Maliwal claimed Sravan was under treatment for HIV positive. More than 12 iron rods were recovered from the cell. Additional SP Mahmood Khan said the prisoners may have stolen these from a construction site inside the jail.
Sravan was transferred to Ajmer Central Jail from Jaipur jail after he picked up a fight there, said Maliwal. He was sentenced for attempt to murder. Fardeen was transferred from Udaipur jail two years ago and was also sentenced for attempt to murder.
Police registered a case against prisoners for attacking jail staff and later causing the death of an inmate. Postmortem report and judicial enquiry will bring clarity to the case, sources said.
