Opposition attacks UP govt, seeks high-level Ansari death probe | India News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday targeted Uttar Pradesh‘s Yogi Adityanath-led BJP govt over gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari‘s death in jail, demanding that all such suspicious fatalities in custody be probed under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge. BSP chief Mayawati also pressed for a high-level probe into Ansari’s death.
“UP is passing through its worst phase of govt anarchy. The manner in which govt overlooks the judicial system and adopts a different route is completely unlawful,” Akhilesh posted on ‘X’ amid allegations of foul play by Ansari’s relatives.
“It is the primary duty and responsibility of the state to ensure safety and security of the people in every situation and at every place, be it inside a police lock-up, during a dispute with fellow inmates in jail, if an inmate is unwell inside the jail, while inmate is being taken to court or hospital, while in hospital…” Akhilesh added.

In his post, the SP chief also referred to alleged fake encounters “in the garb of accidents and dressed-up suicides”. “Failure of the state to provide adequate protection in any of these situations will shake people’s confidence in the justice system,” the SP chief wrote.

Mayawati alluded to “doubts” raised by Ansari’s family. “A high-level inquiry is necessary so that the actual cause of his death is known,” she said. The probe calls came as a host of senior leaders, including sitting SP MLAs, trooped to Ansari’s native place in Ghazipur district’s Mohammadabad. They met Ansari’s elder brother Sibghatullah and offered condolences. Afzal Ansari, another of Ansari’s brothers who is five-time MLA and two-time Lok Sabha MP, is the SP candidate from Ghazipur seat in this year’s general elections.

The SP leaders questioned the haste behind discharging Ansari from Banda hospital after he was found unconscious in his jail barracks a few days ago. “What was the hurry to send him back when he was not well,” said Suhaib Ansari, SP MLA from Mohammadabad.
