MUMBAI: Archana Patil Chakurkar, daughter-in-law of former Lok Sabha speaker Shivraj Patil, has joined the BJP on Saturday, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The induction took place in the presence of deputy chief minister Devendra Fadanvis and State BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Archana, who chairs Lifecare Hospital and Research Centre in Udgir, met Fadnavis at his Mumbai residence ‘Sagar’ before joining.
Her husband, Shailesh Patil Chandurkar, is the Congress’ state secretary. Shivraj Patil, a former Union Home Minister, led the Congress-led UPA government from 2004 to 2008. In a separate event, Independent MP Navneet Rana also joined BJP in Nagpur, with BJP state president Bawankule.
“For the last five years, I was working on the ideas of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, my ideology is no different. My husband, MLA Ravi Rana, also supported the BJP government in Maharashtra. PM Modi supports those working at ground level, he gave me the ticket. The BJP has honoured my hard work, and we will fulfil our resolve of crossing 400 by winning the election…I will work as a dedicated worker for the BJP,” said Navneet Rana.
The BJP has strategically chosen Navneet Rana to contest from the Amravati constituency in Maharashtra and Govind Karjol from Chitradurga in Karnataka, both seats reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates. Rana, who previously won as an independent candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, entered politics after marrying BJP leader Ravi Rana. Initially contesting unsuccessfully in 2014 on the NCP ticket, Rana later secured victory as an independent candidate in 2019.
Maharashtra’s Lok Sabha elections are scheduled in five phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20, with the vote count set for June 4. With 48 Lok Sabha seats, Maharashtra holds significant political weight in national politics. In the 2019 polls, the BJP led with 23 seats, closely followed by the Shiv Sena with 18 seats. The state’s diverse political landscape and substantial electoral influence make it a key player in shaping the country’s political dynamics.
