THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Delhi-based lawyer has written to the poll panel accusing Thiruvananthapuram BJP candidate and Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar of filing a false affidavit on assets in nomination papers.
Supreme Court advocate Avani Bansal filed her petition with district electoral officer Geromic George on Friday, the day for scrutiny of nominations.Bansal has sought rejection of Chandrasekhar’s nomination. Chandrasekhar is pitted against Congress’s Shashi Tharoor.
Bansal had filed a similar complaint with EC and Delhi HC when Chandrasekhar contested Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka in 2018. “On September 22, 2022, the Election Commission wrote to me that my previous complaint has been forwarded to the ministry of finance,” Bansal said, adding “nothing has materialised yet”.
BJP sources termed the allegations “politically motivated”, saying they have been dismissed by EC and Delhi HC in the past. “This underscores Congress’s persistence in propagating a fabricated narrative against the BJP candidate despite lack of proof,” a source said.
