YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has said that he doesn’t know whether OpenAI is using YouTube videos to train Sora, an AI model by the ChatGPT-maker that can create realistically-looking videos on the basis of text commands.
Mohan responded to a question about YouTube videos potentially being used to train Sora. OpenAI CTO, Mira Murati, previously stated in an interview that she was unclear on the data used to train Sora, their video-generating AI model.YouTube CEO Neal Mohan confirmed he has no knowledge of this.
“Well I don’t know. I think first you would have to ask them. I have seen reports that it may or may not have been used. I have no information myself and so I would encourage you to ask them directly,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg.

‘OpenAI training Sora on YouTube videos violates the platform’s rules’

Mohan added that if OpenAI was using YouTube videos to train Sora it would be against the company’s rules.
“We have clear terms of service. When a creator uploads their hard work to our platform, they have certain expectations. One of those expectations is that the terms of service is going to be abided by. It does not allow for things like transcripts or video bits to be downloaded,” he said.
When asked whether Google is using Youtube videos to train Gemini, Mohan said the search giant uses “YouTube content in accordance with terms of service or individual contracts that we might have with creators or uploaders to our platform.”
