The holy month of Ramadan is close to Eid’s chaand raat. While many TV actors who observe the fast have been juggling with their shoot and their religious practices. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes TV, Hiba shared her memories of her first roza, how she has been managing without family and more.
How are you managing Ramzan and shoot? Any preparations for Iftaar at home?
It does get difficult for us but we have to shoot and even follow the holy month of Ramzan. It has been quite a few years since I have been working during Ramzan, I think it is wonderful to keep working and following our religious beliefs simultaneously. My mother cooks yummy food whenever I keep Roza and I look forward to it. When you keep roza, you eagerly waiting when will iftari happen and will get to sit with mom and eat.
What is your childhood memory of Ramzan?
It goes way back when I kept my very first roza. I was quite young, 7-8 years old, usually young kids don’t keep roza but I was so fascinated. I decided that I wanna do it. Especially for Muslims, we celebrate the first Roza. It is a big celebration but my family couldn’t prepare because I suddenly decided not to eat after sehri.
Conti…
I didn’t even know how to read namaz, so my mother and aunties used to guide me and make me pray namaz. It is said that without namaz, your roza isn’t fulfilled. Within a few hours, my family planned a nice celebration, it wasn’t grand but had all my relatives and family members. I was looking forward to seeing my nani and my maternal relatives. They all were there at my celebration.
Any special dishes that you love during Ramzan? Are you a sweets person, your favourite dish?
It would sound odd, but I love baingan ke pakode. Usually, people don’t like eggplant but I really loved them and quite a few times I used to keep eating them with ketchup and then in the main course I would devour biryani. I do have my days when I really crave sweets. In Bareilly, we have this sweet called khajla. It is fried and made out of refined flour and done really well with ghee and then soaked in milk. We used to have it in sehri.

Have you cooked something for Iftaar? Any such dish that you are pro-at?
I am not getting any time this Ramzan but I love to cook. Back in lockdown, I was at home and Ramzan happened. So at that time, I was cooking a lot of dishes and I miss that. I think I cook really good aate ka halwa. I figured that out in lockdown as you couldn’t get cakes and all so I used to make the halwa cake for everyone’s birthday and garnish it with dry fruits.
