NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called Uddhav Thackeray‘s party — Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) — a ‘nakli’ (fake) Shiv Sena.
During his rally in Maharashtra‘s Chandrapur, PM Modi said ‘naki Shiv Sena’ and Congress invited those to the state for a rally who demeaned Sanatam Dharma by comparing it to diseases like dengue and malaria.
Last year, Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, triggered a major outrage with his remarks that “Sanatana Dharma” should be eradicated.
The DMK youth wing secretary and Tamil Nadu youth welfare minister had claimed that Sanatana Dharma is against equality and social justice and equated it with “mosquitoes, Dengue, Malaria, fever and Corona”, adding that it should be stamped out like these ailments.
PM Modi’s remark was indicated towards chief minister MK Stalin’s presence in Mumbai during the culmination of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on March 17.
“Congress MPs are talking about another partition of India. Indi alliance people are threatening to separate South India. When the DMK party, which is a part of the Indi alliance, is calling Sanatan dengue-malaria and is talking about its elimination, the ‘nakli’ (fake) Shiv Sena people are organising rallies of the same people in Maharashtra,” PM said in the rally.
The Prime Minister said he feels happy that Maharashtra chief minister “Eknath Shinde and his party (Shiv Sena) is carrying forward Balasaheb’s idea with full force”.
Vertical Shiv Sena split
In 2022, the Shiv Sena, which was the largest party in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), saw a vertical split when Eknath Shinde and 39 other MLAs revolted against chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and joined hands with BJP.
The defection of a majority of Sena MLAs led to the collapse of the MVA government, prompting Uddhav to resign as CM.
Shinde then formed a Shiv Sena-BJP government with former CM Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.
Several political leaders credited Fadnavis for engineering the split in Shiv Sena. The BJP leader himself admitted to playing a key role in the Shinde-led revolt, calling it “an act of revenge”.
Later, assembly speaker and BJP leader Rahul Narwekar held that the faction led by Shinde was the “real Shiv Sena” when it emerged on June 21, 2022. He also declared the appointments of legislator Bharat Gogawale as the Shiv Sena whip and Shinde as the party leader valid.
