NEW DELHI: The Union government on Tuesday provided chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar with a Z-category VIP security cover in the wake of potential threats, official sources said.
The Union ministry of home affairs has entrusted the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) with the responsibility of deploying a contingent of approximately 40-45 armed commandos to ensure the safety of CEC Kumar, as per the sources.
The decision follows a threat perception report prepared by central security agencies, which recommended robust security measures for chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar. This move coincides with the preparations for the upcoming seven-phase general elections commencing on April 19.
The armed commandos will accompany CEC Kumar during his travels across the country, ensuring enhanced security during his official engagements.
Rajiv Kumar, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1984 batch, assumed the role of the 25th Chief Election Commissioner on May 15, 2022. Previously, he served as an election commissioner in the poll body, having been appointed to the position on September 1, 2020.
