CUDDALORE: A fortune-teller whose parrot had predicted a win for Thankar Bachan, PMK candidate from Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore LS seat, was arrested on Tuesday for keeping the bird in captivity. PMK, part of BJP-led NDA, described the action in the DMK-governed state as “height of fascism“.
Forest ranger J Ramesh claimed parrots were categorised “Schedule II species” under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and keeping them in captivity was a crime.Forest officials said Selvaraj would be let off with a warning and penalty, which may go up to Rs 10,000.
Astrologer Selvaraj had no idea he might have ruffled many feathers when he and his bird hit headlines Sunday after predicting Bachan’s win.
PMK chief Anbumani Ramadoss slammed the arrest. “DMK’s foolish action reveals (its) fear of defeat,” he added.
