NEW DELHI: Two people were killed in a shootout between two armed groups in Imphal East district of Manipur on Saturday. The victims have not been identified yet. The clash occurred near Kangpokpi district border, as confirmed by a police official.
To control the situation, additional state and central forces have been deployed.
This incident follows a recent gunfight in Tengnoupal district where three people were injured.
Last year, Manipur witnessed ethnic tensions resulting in 219 fatalities during a protest for tribal rights. Meiteis, comprising 53% of the state’s population, predominantly inhabit the Imphal Valley, while Nagas and Kukis, constituting over 40%, reside in the hill districts.
The authorities are actively monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation of violence.
