DEHRADUN: A 30-year-old former security guard with a private agency who was running a fraudulent call centre which had duped people across the country on pretext of offering loans under the PM Mudra Loan scheme (PMMLS), was on Saturday nabbed by the Uttarakhand police special task force (STF) and state cyber cell from a temple in Vrindavan, where he was allegedly conducting a pooja in repentance for his crimes.
From Sultanpur in UP, Deepak Raj Sharma initially did small jobs in Dehradun including working as a security guard after landing in the town in 2015. “His journey in crime began when he joined a fraudulent call centre the same year, hoodwinking individuals with promises of mobile signal tower installation at their homes. He was arrested and subsequently jailed,” STF SSP Ayush Agrawal said.
Released on bail a few months later, Sharma established his own fraudulent call centre in Dehradun’s posh Vasant Vihar area in 2022. “He employed some youngsters to call people across India and dupe them on the pretext of offering them loans under PMMLS,” Agrawal said. Another STF officer involved in his arrest said Sharma opened another call centre in the city’s Premnagar area.
“He recruited 10 youngsters, including three who could speak Telugu, to dupe people in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.”
