JAIPUR: A pregnant woman was allegedly forced to give birth outside the Kanwatia Government Hospital in the city on April 3, revealing that the medical facility did not currently have a permanent obstetrics and gynaecology unit.
Four years ago, the same hospital had a dedicated obstetrics and gynaecology unit. But currently, the Sawai Man Singh Medical College provides a rotating unit on a monthly basis. This has had a negative impact on the quality of care provided to patients at the hospital which facilitates delivery of around 140 to 150 babies every month.
Other hospitals such as Gangori Hospital, affiliated to SMS Medical College, have dedicated obstetrics and gynecology units unlike Kanwatia.
“A meeting was held to improve the facilities in Kanwatia Hospital,” claimed an official of the medical education department. Following this, the hospital administration requested for a permanent gynaecology unit, comprising a professor, associate and assistant professors as well as senior resident doctors. The hospital has said that they admit between 140 and 150 pregnant women every month and demanded a permanent unit to prevent any untoward incidents.
Suspension revoked of senior resident
The medical education department had constituted a five-member committee to reinvestigate the matter of the pregnant woman giving birth outside the hospital on April 3. Following the investigation, senior resident Dr Sushma was suspended along with three other resident doctors. Later, Dr Sushma’s suspension was withdrawn following her appeal.
