Eventually, UP Police took notice of the tweets & posted on their X account: “Thank you for pointing it out. The dropdown is based on master data populated by NCRB. Other states have also flagged this issue with the concerned agency. We are taking it up with them to rectify the anomaly.” It wasn’t clear what NCRB, which records cases of crime that are registered by police, has to do with professions. Officials TOI spoke to did not have a clear explanation, but said it could be an issue with the way data was fed.
UPCOP app data is sourced from NCRB, says officer
Since the UPCOP app is also used for filing complaints and generating FIRs, it uses NCRB data to specify offences under IPC sections, an official said.
Asked about the error, a senior officer at police headquarters in Lucknow told TOI that the UPCOP app’s tenant verification feature, meant to assist landlords in verifying details about tenants while renting out properties, sources its data from NCRB. “UPCOP is monitored by the technical services department, which is headed by an ADG rank officer. NCRB data is not changed. Uttarakhand had flagged a similar issue in the past. Similarly, we will also seek necessary changes,” the official said.
The govt-developed app was introduced a few years ago to facilitate services online. Apart from tenant verification, it allows users to file complaints in cases of loot and cybercrimes, in which FIRs are necessary for insurance or recovery. Similarly, it is used for employee verification, police verification and character certificate verification as well as for permission for protests, events and film shoots.
