CHENNAI/PUDUCHERRY: A 26-year-old man, weighing 150 kg, died from complications during a weight-loss surgery at a private hospital in Chennai, prompting Tamil Nadu govt to order an enquiry, health minister Ma Subramanian informed his parents on Thursday. Hemachandran, from Puducherry, was carted into Pammal’s BP Jain Hospital operation theatre for metabolic and bariatric surgery at 9.30am on Tuesday. He developed a slow heart rate during the surgery around 10.15am. He was then rushed to Rela Hospitals at Chrompet for intensive care, where he died that night, said a senior doctor. “We are waiting for more reports and test results from the hospital,” added the doctor.
Minister Subramanian on Thursday called Hemachandran’s bereaved parents on phone, expressing condolences and assuring them of a thorough probe into the death of their son. However, state directorate of medical services said preliminary inquiries “indicated no negligence on the part of the medical team”.
Hemachandran’s patients did not agree to a post-mortem, and state medical council has not received any complaints from them so far, sources said. Puducherry AIADMK deputy secretary and Vaiyapuri Manikandan urged CM N Rangasamy to press the Union government to constitute a committee comprising experts from AIIMS to probe the youth’s death. He urged TN govt to cancel the licence of the hospital if found guilty of negligence.
