MUMBAI: Consul general of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Mumbai, Zakia Wardak, resigned from her post after TOI reported Saturday that she had been caught at the city airport allegedly trying to smuggle 25 kg gold worth Rs 18.6 crore into India from Dubai, reports Mateen Hafeez.
Wardak announced her resignation in a post on X hours after the report appeared, detailing how DRI officials stopped her at the airport on April 25 and found gold bars hidden inside special compartments stitched to her clothes.DRI is also probing her earlier trips, particularly in past six months following information raising doubts about her conduct. She was not arrested as she enjoys diplomatic immunity.
A jeweller suspected to be part of a smuggling racket is under the scanner, TOI has learnt. Wardak was not carrying legal documents for possession of the gold. DRI has registered a case of gold smuggling under the Customs Act, 1962.
