3 workers killed in Ballari steel plant accident; swept away in tunnel – Times of India



BALLARI: Three civil workers were swept away in a tunnel at a steel plant of a private company in the industrial hub of Torangal in Karnataka‘s Ballari district on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Panthi Jadeppa, 31, from Hosapete (Karnataka), Shivamahadev, 22, of Chennai and Sushant Krishna Nainaru, 23, of Bengaluru.
Water is continuously pumped through tunnels to cool down the red-hot iron rods.On Thursday, due to a problem in power supply, the water flow was stopped in the tunnel of a particular unit.
The three workers entered the tunnel to inspect it. While the trio was inside, a sudden massive gush of water flooded the tunnel, washing away the three workers and dumping them into tanks nearly 80 feet deep.
District SP Ranjith Kumar Bandaru said two bodies were recovered by Thursday night and the third was found on Friday morning.
The company is yet to issue an official statement on the accident.
