LONDON: A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder after an Indian-origin grandmother, a British citizen, was stabbed to death in broad daylight in London after resisting a mugger trying to steal her handbag.
Anita Mukhey (66) was stabbed to death at a bus stop in Burnt Oak Broadway, Edgware, last Thursday at 11.50am after battling the thief for her handbag.
Police, ambulance and the air ambulance rushed to the scene, where Mukhey was treated for knife wounds. The first paramedic arrived in two minutes. However, she died at the scene.
Footage on X shows her lying in a pool of blood with shop staff crowding round her with towels.
Jalal Debella (22) was arrested on suspicion of murder in the Colindale area the same day.He appeared on Saturday at Willesden magistrates’ court charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon. He was remanded to appear at the Old Bailey on Monday A Met police spokesperson said: “We’re not going to release his nationality at this stage.”
Jess Bloom (24), working at a hair salon, told the Times the woman was stabbed by a man attempting to rob her handbag. “The guy was trying to get her handbag but she said ‘no’ and fought back. I saw her pull the handbag twice. He pulled her into the road and stabbed her three times,” Bloom was quoted as saying.
“He let go of her and she dropped to the ground in the middle of the road. She was covered in blood and his hand was red. He ran off and everyone ran to the woman to help her,” Bloom said.
Another man told the Times he saw the man leaving “as cool as a cucumber” before breaking into a run when people chased him.
Mukhey leaves behind a husband, Hari, daughter, Laila, son, Dev, and two grandchildren. She was a married mother and grandmother devoted to her family and worked part-time in the NHS as a medical secretary, her family said.
