NEW DELHI: The Election Commission directed the ministry of home affairs to retain 25 central armed police forces in Andhra Pradesh for 15 days after counting to control any violence after declaration of results on June 4. The poll body also expressed dissatisfaction over the post-poll violence in Andhra Pradesh and issued directives to the chief secretary and DGP to prevent its recurrence.
All superintendent of police (SPs) have been instructed to implement preemptive measures to avert similar situations in the future.
Taking strict action against officials, the Commission transferred the district collector of Palnadu and initiated a departmental inquiry. It also suspended the SPs of Palnadu and Ananthapuramu districts. Additionally, SP of Tirupati was also transferred. Apart from this, 12 subordinate police officials in Palnadu, Anathapuramu, and Tirupati districts were also suspended.
A Special Investigation Team will investigate each case and has been mandated to submit a report within 2 days.
This comes after the EC summoned the Andhra Pradesh chief secretary and DGP to ‘personally explain’ the reasons behind the failure to contain the post-poll violence.
Following the simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections held on Monday, reports of post-poll violence emerged from various parts of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. The leaders of the ruling YSRCP and the opposition TDP have accused each other of being responsible for the incidents.
