‘No bigger contempt of SC than this’: Amit Shah on Kejriwal’s campaign statement | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Friday criticized Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal‘s campaign statement, saying that it showed contempt for the Supreme Court.
In an interview with news agency ANI, Amit Shah questioned whether the Supreme Court would make decisions on crime based on electoral outcomes, emphasizing that Kejriwal’s remarks were inappropriate and misrepresented the functioning of the apex court.
“There can be no bigger contempt (of the Supreme Court) than this. Will the Supreme Court make decisions on crime based on (electoral) victory or defeat? I am not saying it; Kejriwal ji is saying it,” the home minister said.
“I have not heard it (Arvind Kejriwal’s remarks). You said I read it in the newspaper. But, if he has said so, then it is a very wrong comment on the functioning of the Supreme Court, ” Shah added.
The home minister’s response came after Kejriwal’s controversial statement during a roadshow in Amritsar on Thursday, where he said, “If you vote for me, I will not have to go to jail.” Kejriwal, accompanied by Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, appealed to the public, suggesting that their vote would determine his freedom or imprisonment.
Commenting on the Supreme Court’s verdict granting Kejriwal interim bail, Shah refrained from directly addressing the court’s decision. However, he pointed out that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders’ claims of victory were misguided.
Shah explained that the Supreme Court had dismissed Kejriwal’s plea challenging the legality of his arrest and rejected his request for bail. The court ultimately granted interim bail to allow Kejriwal to campaign in the elections, with the condition that he surrender on June 2.
Shah also took a swipe at Kejriwal’s campaign, suggesting that people would be reminded of the liquor scam whenever they saw him. He humorously remarked that people might visualize large bottles in front of them when they encountered Kejriwal.
Since his release from jail, Kejriwal has launched several attacks on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Supreme Court granted him interim bail until June 1 in a money laundering case related to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.
The polling for New Delhi is scheduled for May 25 in the sixth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The seven-phase election marathon spans six weeks, running from April 19 to June 1, with the counting results set to be declared on June 4.
