NEW DELHI: Former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad Yadav on Saturday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s accusation that the opposition would confiscate “one of two buffalos” from the people if elected to power, saying, “will give you my camel.”
PM Modi has been criticizing the opposition over the inheritance tax row, claiming that if the Congress and INDIA bloc win the elections, they will impose the tax and seize more than half of inherited property.
When questioned about this allegation, Lalu Yadav told ANI, “Come and take my camel, will give you my camel.” He further stated that Prime Minister Modi‘s frequent visits to Bihar indicate that the BJP is losing ground. “Modi ji is coming here multiple times…it means he is finished,” he said, expressing confidence that the INDIA bloc will emerge victorious in the upcoming elections and form the government. “There is no competition, INDIA bloc will win everywhere,” the RJD supremo added.
The controversy surrounding inheritance tax arose after Sam Pitroda, the former Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, discussed the concept prevailing in America and the need for policy discussions on wealth redistribution.
However, the Congress party distanced itself from Pitroda’s remarks, stating that inheritance tax laws do not reflect the party’s stance. Despite this, the BJP strongly criticized the Congress party over Pitroda’s comments.
In another controversial statement, Pitroda remarked that “people of the East look like the Chinese and those of the South look like Africans,” causing a major political uproar during the election season and embarrassing the Congress. As a result, Pitroda resigned from his position as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress.
Currently, the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar are undergoing polls in all seven phases. In the 2019 elections, the BJP-led NDA alliance dominated the state, securing 39 out of 40 seats, while the Congress won only one seat, and the RJD failed to open its account. The Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), the opposition coalition in Bihar, comprises the RJD, Congress, and Left parties.
The RJD is contesting 26 seats, while the Congress is contesting nine. Within the NDA, the BJP and JD(U) will contest 17 and 16 seats, respectively, with smaller allies contesting the remaining seats. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.
