‘Thanks to the two people who…’: Jaishankar on Chabahar Port | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Monday thanked Israeli’s president and foreign minister, who lost their lives in a helicopter crash, for the Chabahar Port agreement and said India will get the benefit from this.
Speaking on the Chabahar Port, Jaishankar remarked, “We’ve been trying for almost 20 years now to have an agreement with Iran.We could have a short-term agreement because there were a lot of problems on their side. But in recent months, thanks to the two people who unfortunately died yesterday in the helicopter crash, the president of Iran and the foreign minister of Iran. Because of their interest and initiative, we were able to finalize a long-term agreement. This is very important because one of the big things in the world connectivity corridor… “
He made these remarks at Delhi Tamil Education Association school in New Delhi.
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash, the government confirmed. And seven others were killed after the crash in a remote, mountainous area of Iran’s northwest.
Highlighting the significance of this development, Jaishankar emphasised that the Chabahar port agreement transcends its immediate role as a port. It symbolises a broader shift towards enhanced connectivity, with India poised at the heart of this transformative corridor.
“India’s position will be very much at the centre of this whole thing. It will benefit us. So the Chabahar port agreement is something bigger than a port. It is part of a connectivity change that we are looking at, and that’s why we are very keen to go forward,” he added.
India and Iran sealed a 10-year agreement to jointly develop and manage the Chabahar port in order to develop the strategic and economic cooperation.
Under the agreement, India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) committed to investing $370 million to enhance the port’s infrastructure. This includes acquiring strategic equipment and expanding the transport facilities, essential for transforming Chabahar into a dynamic regional hub for trade transit.
‘India’s diplomacy is Bharat first’
Talking about the possible changes in India’s foreign policy due to changing geopolitics, EAM said that the first thing for India’s diplomacy is Bharat first, need to make sure Bharat is secure, at peace, and if terrorist attacks are carried out then there is a strong punishment against those who carried out the attack.
Recalling the Ukraine and Israel-Gaza war, Jaishankar said that none of the people ever thought that that this will continue for another 3 years or 7 months respectively.
“The first thing for India’s diplomacy is Bharat first, we must make sure Bharat is secure, at peace, and terrorist attacks are not carried out against our country… If there are we must make sure that there is a strong punishment for those who carried out the attack,” Jaishankar added.
