First time in history! Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover to make Range Rover, Range Rover Sport models in India; prices to fall up to 22% – Times of India

Jaguar Land Rover owned by India’s Tata Motors, is set to commence the production of its iconic Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models in India. This marks the first time in the 54-year history of these models that they will be manufactured outside of the UK. Previously, both models were exclusively produced at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in the UK and exported to around 121 markets worldwide, including India.
According to a PTI report, by increasing localization, the renowned British brand aims to improve the pricing of the two models to appeal to a broader customer base in India. The local production is expected to reduce the prices of the two models by 18-22%.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Group, lauded Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, for bringing the JLR brand into the Tata family 15 years ago.
“..the Range Rover will be manufactured right here in India is just a super feeling..its a very very special moment and I feel proud..” he said.
Chandrasekaran also expressed confidence in the company’s future sales growth in the country, stating, “We will sell more, I am very confident that it’s going to be a great journey from here.”
In an interaction with PTI, Rajan Amba, Managing Director of JLR India, emphasized that local production is a significant step for the company to make the two models more accessible to a wider range of customers in the country.

“For the first time in the history of the company, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will also now be produced in India…this is a huge announcement for us as these are our flagship cars and have only been produced in Solihull in their 54 years long history,” Amba said. He also noted that this move is an indication of the growing market for premium products in India.
“This local assembly will enable us to benefit from the duty structure, reducing the prices of the two models by approximately 18 to 22 percent,” said Amba. He added that the price reduction will make the models more affordable and boost sales.
JLR India has reported an 81% increase in retail sales for the last fiscal year, reaching 4,436 units. Amba, said that JLR has carefully planned its expansion strategy to grow its business in the country.
“Our intent is to double our business in the next three years. We will bring innovative products, leverage the Tata Group ecosystem and bring in the latest innovative products to the country,” Amba said. Additionally, JLR aims to introduce six new battery electric vehicles in India over the next four years.

The local production of the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover models will result in significant price reductions. The Range Rover Sport, available for deliveries in August, will be priced at Rs 1.4 crore, down from its current price of Rs 1.9 crore.
Similarly, the Range Rover Autobiography version, available from the end of this month, will cost Rs 2.6 crore, compared to its current price of around Rs 3.3 crore. “So the products remain very premium but more in a price range where we can capture that aspiration and desire to be affiliated to the brand,” Amba explained. The local production will also help reduce the waiting period for these two SUVs over the next year.
With the addition of these two models, JLR India will now be producing a total of six models at the Pune-based facility it shares with Tata Motors. The plant currently has an installed production capacity of around 10,000 units per annum and already assembles the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar F-PACE, and Discovery Sport.
