Met Sonia after 20 years, Congress will play role of constructive opposition: Shahu Chhatrapati | Kolhapur News – Times of India



KOLHAPUR: Shahu Chhatrapati, the newly elected MP from the Kolhapur Lok Sabha constituency, met Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday.
The new MP was accompanied by Congress MLC Satej Patil and former Congress MLA Malojiraje Chhatrapati during his meeting with Sonia Gandhi.
Speaking to TOI, Shahu Chhatrapati said: “We spoke for few minutes.She told us that we need to play the crucial role of constructive opposition. She applauded the efforts of the Maharashtra party politicians for the work they had done during the elections. I had last met her 20 years ago, in 2004, when Malojiraje (Shahu Chhatrapati’s son) was the Congress candidate for the Kolhapur assembly constituency, which he had won.”
Shahu Chhatrapati, after getting a Congress nomination for the Kolhapur Lok Sabha seat, had said that he may be among very few candidates who did not have to travel to get the ticket. Shahu Chhatrapati also attended a meeting of newly elected Congress MPs, during which, a resolution was passed to make Congress MP Rahul Gandhi the Leader of Opposition.
“We all endorsed it. He has made strong efforts for the party. As a result, the party has increased its numbers in crucial states such as Maharashtra and particularly, Uttar Pradesh. Every party of the INDIA bloc will support him. I have joined Congress on the basis of principles to serve all communities together and help people in need,” he said.
The newly elected MP met Sharad Pawar, president of NCP (SCP), on Friday. “We are also going to meet Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday,” said Shahu Chhatrapati.
