NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the oath of office for a historic third consecutive term at 7.15pm on Sunday along with his council of ministers in a grand ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
With this, 73-year-old PM Modi has now equaled former PM Jawaharlal Nehru‘s record, who also served three consecutive terms.
Top leaders from India’s neighbourhood and the Indian Ocean region — Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Bhutanese PM Tshering Tobgay and Vice-President of Seychelles Ahmed Afif — were special guests at the function.
In addition to political leaders and eminent persons from different walks of life, members from the transgender community as well as sanitation workers and labourers, who were involved in the construction of the new parliament building, also attended the swearing-in ceremony of Modi and the new council of ministers.
Nearly 9,000 people were estimated to be present at the forecourts of the Rashtrapati Bhavan to witness the swearing-in ceremony.
Underlining PM Modi’s achievement, vice president Jagdeep Dhankar had recently stated that it is for the “first time in the last six decades that a prime minister has returned to power for a third consecutive term”. “It is for the first time since 1962 that a prime minister has got a third term,” he added.
Jawharlal Nehru contested the first general elections in India after Independence, and became the first ever Prime Minister of the country in 1952. Thereafter, the next general elections were held in 1957 for 505 seats in the Lok Sabha. Securing another landslide victory, Jawaharlal Nehru became the PM of India for the second time, bagging 371 seats. In his third consecutive election, Jawharlal Nehru, contested the Lok Sabha polls in 1962, held across 508 seats, and won 361 seats. This led Jawaharlal Nehru to become the Prime Minister of India for the third time in a row, with a vote share of 44.72%.
Jawaharlal Nehru served as the Prime Minister of India from the time India gained independence till May 27, 1964, the day he died of heart attack.
Modi’s tenure as the Prime Minister began with his landslide victory in the 2014 general elections, when he secured 282 seats out of 545 and a 31% vote share.
Thereafter, in an even massive sweep, the Modi-led BJP attained majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, winning 303 seats.
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections witnessed the BJP bagging 240 seats and cornering a vote share of 36.5%.
