NEW DELHI: Kannada film actor Darshan Thoogudeepa was arrested and sent to 6-day police custody on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a man who allegedly made derogatory comments about his close friend.
Police sources revealed that the “Challenging Star” and 12 others were taken into custody and questioned earlier in the day. The murder victim, identified as Renukaswamy, was found dead on June 9.
Renukaswamy, an employee of a pharmaceutical company from Chitradurga, had reportedly made derogatory remarks on social media about actress Pavithra Gowda, a close friend of Darshan. Pavithra has also been arrested.
The police allege that after killing Renukaswamy in a shed at Pattanagere, Kamakshipalya, the body was disposed of in a stormwater drain. The shed is reportedly linked to one of Darshan’s associates.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda stated that the murder case was registered following the discovery of the body and the injuries observed. Through CCTV footage and technical evidence, the deceased was identified as Renukaswamy.
Local residents notified the police about the body, leading to an autopsy that confirmed the murder. Eleven suspects were arrested, and their statements led to Darshan and Pavithra being taken into custody.
The investigation is ongoing to determine Darshan’s involvement in the murder or the conspiracy, according to a police official.
The 47-year-old actor was apprehended from a Mysuru hotel earlier in the day and brought in for questioning for his alleged involvement in the murder.
Renukaswamy’s parents are devastated by the news. His father, Srinivasaiah, said, “He was my only son. He got married last year. I spoke to him on Saturday only. I want justice.”
Police have increased security at Darshan’s residence in RR Nagar. Darshan, who debuted as a lead actor in the 2002 movie ‘Majestic’, has a large fan following.
