LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday formally forwarded his resignation from Karhal assembly seat to the assembly speaker.
Akhilesh Yadav, who won the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency, also holds the Karhal assembly seat. The move has put to rest speculations over whether he will retain his position as Leader of Opposition in the state assembly or lead the party MPs in the Parliament.He was elected MP from Kannauj in the recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
“I have met the workers of Karhal and Mainpuri and told them that as I have won the elections from 2 seats, I have to leave a seat. So I will inform you about leaving the seat of Vidhan Sabha soon,” Akhilesh Yadav said in a press conference on Tuesday.
In the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency, Akhilesh secured his family’s stronghold by garnering 6,42,292 votes, surpassing the incumbent BJP MP Subrat Pathak by a margin exceeding 1 lakh votes.
Samajwadi Party MLA Awadhesh Prasad has also tendered his resignation from the Legislative Assembly after being elected as a Member of Parliament from the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency.
In the Lok Sabha elections held in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party (SP) clinched 37 seats, while the BJP secured 33 seats. The Congress party won 6 seats, and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) obtained 2 seats. The Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) and Apna Dal (Soneylal) managed to win 1 seat each.
