NEW DELHI: A devastating fire broke out in a labour housing facility located in the Mangaf area of Kuwait on Wednesday, resulting in the loss of approximately 40 Indian lives and leaving more than 50 individuals injured, the ministry of external said in a statement.
The Embassy is currently working to obtain comprehensive details from the relevant Kuwaiti authorities and the company involved.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” MEA said in a statement.
The total number of fatalities in the Al-Mangaf building reached 49, with 42 of the victims being Indian nationals. The remaining casualties included Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, and Nepali nationals.
The injured individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical treatment and care at five government hospitals in Kuwait, namely Adan, Jaber, Farwaniya, Mubarak Al Kabeer, and Jahra hospitals. According to reports from the hospital authorities, the majority of the admitted patients are in stable condition.
In response to the incident, Shri Adarsh Swaika, the Ambassador of India in Kuwait, promptly visited the site of the fire and the hospitals to assess the well-being of the Indian nationals affected. The Embassy is maintaining close coordination with local authorities to provide assistance to the injured Indian nationals and offer all necessary support. The Kuwaiti authorities have been fully cooperative with the Embassy throughout this process.
Acting on the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh is set to travel to Kuwait without delay. His primary objectives are to facilitate the swift repatriation of the mortal remains and ensure that those who have been injured receive the necessary medical assistance, according to the MEA.
The Embassy of India in Kuwait remains in constant communication with local authorities to provide relief to those affected by this tragic event. A dedicated helpline, +965-65505246 (available via WhatsApp and regular calls), has been established by the Embassy to assist family members seeking information and support. The helpline will be regularly updated with the latest information.

“The fire mishap in Kuwait City is saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. PMO released a statement noting that PM Modi expressed deep sorrow over the “unfortunate incident” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh to each of the families of the deceased Indian nationals from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
