Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, the company that has been making phones for about a decade and a half, thinks people are spending a little too much time on their smartphones. What could be the solution to it? Could AI help people spend less time on their phones? asked YouTuber Marques Brownlee, popularly known as MKBHD, during an interview post-WWDC 2024. Apple announced a plethora of updates to its OS suite, including new AI features, what Apple calls “Apple Intelligence” at WWDC2024.
To Marques’ question, Cook suggested that it’s a “significant possibly,” and “opportunity does exist” that people may start using their iPhones less as artificial intelligence, or Apple Intelligence becomes smarter, as it would less time to do things on your phone that were taking long.
In an episode of Dua Lipa‘s podcast “At Your Service,” Cook further addressed the issue of smartphone addiction, admitting, “I think there is an excessive use of the smartphone – including the iPhone.”
Then again, in an interview with GQ last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook touched on the issue of smartphone addiction, stating that people, especially children, should limit their phone usage. “We don’t want people using our phones too much. We’re not incentivized for that. We don’t want that. We provide tools so people don’t do that,” Cook said.
Interacting with Brownlee, he talked in detail about the iPhone features that are already available to help people track and control how much they use their devices. He mentioned Screen Time, which shows users how much time they spend on their iPhones.
He shared his own experience with the Screen Time feature with Dua Lipa, saying “The aha moment for me was how many notifications I was getting a day – I was embarrassed by the number.” As a result, he now catches up with more notifications at the end of the day, saying, “I don’t need to know at the moment when something is happening.”
Cook stressed to Brownlee that Apple wants to help users do more with their iPhones, not just spend more time on them. “We don’t need people to use our devices all the time to be successful,” he explained. “Instead, we want to give you the power to do things you couldn’t do before. That’s what drives us.”
