Tech giant Apple is under fire after two female employees filed a lawsuit alleging systemic gender-based pay discrimination. The lawsuit, filed in California, accuses Apple of paying women less than their male counterparts for similar work.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the lawsuit filed by Christine Jong and Samantha Salgado mentions that when Apple hires new people, they consider how much money that person earned at their previous job. This can be a problem because studies show that women often earn less than men in many workplaces. So, if Apple uses that number to decide how much to pay someone new, women might always get paid less, even if they’re doing the same work as a man.
The two women suing Apple, want to represent many other women who currently work or used to work at Apple in different departments, like engineering, which helps design Apple products, marketing, which helps sell those products, and even AppleCare, which helps customers with problems.
The report also mentions that Salgado, raised concerns about pay disparity multiple times. However, Apple only increased her salary after a third-party investigation confirmed the wage gap between her and her male colleagues. However, she did not receive a back pay.
This lawsuit is one of many that talk about how much men and women get paid in tech companies. Apple hasn’t said anything about the lawsuit yet.
