Rahul Gandhi resigns from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has resigned from his Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. He has chosen to retain his Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat confirmed his resignation, effective from June 18.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had announced the decision following discussions with the party’s top leaders at his residence in Delhi.

This ended the speculation surrounding Rahul’s choice between the two seats.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul’s sister, will make her electoral debut by contesting the upcoming bypoll in Wayanad.

After Rahul Gandhi’s resignation, Congress now holds 98 seats in the Lower House. The bypoll for the Wayanad constituency will be the first one in the 18th Lok Sabha.
“Shri Rahul Gandhi, an elected member of Lok Sabha from two constituencies viz Wayanad and Rae Bareli parliamentary constituencies of Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, respectively, has resigned his seat in Lok Sabha from Wayanad parliamentary constituency of Kerala and his resignation has been accepted by the speaker with effect from June 18,” stated a Lok Sabha bulletin.
