NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday assured central assistance to states affected by floods as he spoke to chief ministers of Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat to take stock of the situation.
So far, 109 human lives have been lost in Assam due to floods and nearly six lakh displaced in several districts. In UP, more than 54 people have died in flood-related incidents and nearly 1,500 villages in 22 districts are affected.
Centre has already deployed 162 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) across country — 15 in UP, 12 in Assam, 14 each in Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh, 13 each in J&K and Uttarakhand, 11 in Gujarat and 10 in West Bengal.
In Assam, as per Central Water Commission bulletin, the Brahmaputra and two other rivers are flowing above the danger level. So far, 33.4 lakh people have been affected by the floods. The state is running 169 relief camps sheltering over 36,000 inmates. About 30,000 hectare crop have been damaged, as per an assessment report sent to Centre.
Road network, telephone communication, water supply, electricity and other essential services have also been affected in the flood-affected areas. In UP, 54 human lives have been lost during the current floods, 43 of them due to lightning strikes. More than 14,000 people were evacuated from flood-affected zones and 139 relief camps operating in the state. Besides 15 teams of NDRF, the state has deployed 16 teams of state disaster response force along with boats and other necessary equipment for rescue and relief operation.
