A 21-year-old man wearing a ski mask was arrested on Monday afternoon, just blocks from the Republican National Convention, after police discovered a firearm concealed in his large tactical backpack.
The Milwaukee Police department said that US Capitol Police spotted the suspect around 1 pm (local time), describing him as “looking suspicious, wearing a ski mask and a large tactical backpack in the street,” according to a statement provided to Fox News.
Milwaukee officials reported that three individuals were arrested on Monday, including someone accused of stealing signs from demonstrators and another who allegedly blocked a security checkpoint. Among the arrests was a man carrying a concealed weapon and wearing a ski mask near the secured area.
Upon searching the suspect, authorities found an AK-47 pistol, a mask resembling the horror-movie slasher from “Scream,” and a fully loaded magazine, Fox News reported.
Officers conducted a subject stop and determined that the suspect was concealing a firearm in his backpack. The police department noted that the man did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon in Wisconsin or any other state.
Charges were pending on Tuesday, subject to review by the Milwaukee county district attorney’s office.
A Fox News journalist, citing a federal law enforcement source, reported on Tuesday evening that the man had been caught carrying an AK-47 pistol, a full magazine, and a mask of the Ghostface killer from the horror movie “Scream.”
This arrest occurred a day before another incident where a man allegedly armed with knives was shot and killed just outside the convention’s perimeter in downtown Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that five police officers from Columbus, Ohio, who were deployed to handle potential demonstrations, shot the suspect.
Milwaukee Police chief Jeffrey Norman said that the out-of-state officers fired on the suspect after he lunged at another individual with a knife in each hand. The incident happened less than a mile from the security perimeter surrounding the Fiserv Forum, where the convention’s main activities are taking place.
Separately, on Tuesday, a woman associated with the left-wing protest group Code Pink was also arrested outside a convention-related breakfast event at a local hotel after an altercation with Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI).
Code Pink stated to The Daily Beast that the woman, a Palestinian campaign organizer, was “intentionally bumped into by a bald, white member of Congress while he tried to shove past her,” leading to her arrest on what they claimed were false charges.
Rep. Van Orden released his own statement, claiming he had been “assaulted by what appeared to be a member of the pro-Hamas group CODEPINK” while waiting in line for breakfast. He added, “This appears to be an incident of political violence, and I will never tolerate this. Regardless of the severity of the violence, political violence is political violence.”
