2nd time in over a year: AI Delhi-US nonstop diverts to Russia following snag – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Air India’s Delhi-San Francisco (SFO) flight has been diverted to the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk following a suspected technical snag. It is learnt that a fire alarm went off in the cargo hold of the Boeing 777 after which the crew decided to make an emergency landing in Siberia, which it did safely.
This is the second time in just over a year that an AI nonstop on this route has had to divert to Russia. The Delhi-SFO AI flight of June 6, 2023, was diverted to the Russian port city of Magadan following a glitch in one of the B777-200LR engines. The almost 230 people on board this aircraft were flown out of Magadan after a 39-hour wait.
This time how long it takes to fly them to their destination remains to be seen.
“Air India flight AI-183 operating Delhi to SFO has been diverted to Krasnoyarsk International airport (UNKL) in Russia due to a technical reason. The aircraft has landed safely and we are working with relevant authorities to ensure guests are taken care of while we decide the next course of action. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew remains top priority,” AI said in a statement. The Boeing 777 had taken off from Delhi on Thursday at 3.44 pm.
