‘Division on basis of caste, religion’: Priyanka Gandhi calls Kanwar order ‘attack on Constitution’ | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday strongly opposed the police advisory to display the names of eatery owners along the Kanwar Yatra route in Uttar Pradesh and accused it of being against the Constitution.
In a social media post on X, Priyanka said, “Creating division in society on the basis of caste and religion is a crime against the Constitution. This order should be withdrawn immediately and strict action should be taken against the officials who issued it.”
“Our Constitution guarantees every citizen that he will not be discriminated against on the basis of caste, religion, language or any other basis. The divisive order to put up name boards of the owners of carts, kiosks and shops in Uttar Pradesh is an attack on our Constitution, our democracy and our shared heritage,” she added.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that this move was to ensure no ‘Kanwariya’ buys anything from a Muslim owner’s shop.
The opposition linked the move to “apartheid” in South Africa and policies in Hitler’s Germany.
As the controversy grew, the police clarified in a statement that the intention of the order was not to create any kind of “religious discrimination” but only to facilitate the devotees.
The BJP had yesterday come down heavily on the opposition parties for objecting to the directive of Muzaffarnagar police. The BJP leaders cited the display of Halal certification for Muslims to justify the move and questioned why a decision that has been taken to protect the religious beliefs of Kanwar devotees was being opposed.
The Kanwar Yatra this year is set to commence on July 22, marking the beginning of the Shravan month. This month-long festival attracts people from across the country to Haridwar and Rishikesh to collect water from the Ganga and offer it at Shiva temples upon their return home.
