NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy on Monday said a fire that had erupted onboard Indian Naval Ship Brahmaputra on July 21, had caused severe damage to the vessel, which is now tilting heavily to one side.
The Navy said the fire was brough under control but despite all efforts, the ship could not be brought to the upright position.
All personnel have been accounted for except one junior sailor, for whom a search is in progress, the Navy added.
An inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Navy to investigate the accident.
According to a statement released by the Navy, the incident onboard INS Brahmaputra, a multi-role frigate, occurred on the evening of July 21, while the ship was undergoing refit at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai.
“A fire had broken out onboard the Indian Naval Ship Brahmaputra, a multi-role Frigate, on the evening of July 21 while she was undergoing refit. The fire was brought under control by the ship’s crew with the assistance of firefighters from Naval Dockyard, Mumbai and other ships in the harbour, by the morning of July 22. Further, follow-on actions including sanitisation checks for assessment of residual risk of fire were carried out,” it added.
The ship’s crew, with the help of firefighters from Naval Dockyard and other vessels in the harbor, managed to control the fire by the morning of July 22 and additional measures, including sanitization checks to assess the residual fire risk, were also carried out.
However, later in the afternoon, the ship experienced a severe list to the port side and despite the efforts of the crew, the vessel could not be brought back to an upright position and continued to list further while alongside her berth.
