‘Polavaram irrigation project, financial support for capital city’: What Chandrababu Naidu’s Andhra Pradesh got in Union Budget – Times of India



NEW DELHI: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday announced several projects for Andhra Pradesh while presenting the Union Budget 2024 in Lok Sabha. The move is likely to keep key ally Chandrababu Naidu happy who in the last few days had renewed demand for special category status to Andhra. BJP led NDA govt at Centre heavily depends on Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP to keep the govt floating.
FM Sitharaman announced that 3 Andhra Pradesh district will be provided a backward region grant.Sitharaman further said that the government is fully committed to the completion and financing of the Polavaram irrigation project.
Additionally, she announced that Centre will facilitate special financial support for development of capital city in Andhra Pradesh.
“Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act- Our govt has made efforts to fulfil the commitments in Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. Recognising the state’s need for capital, we will facilitate special financial support through multilateral agencies. In the current FY, Rs 15,000 crore will be arranged with additional amounts in future years,” said FM Sitharaman.
Meanwhile, the Centre also announced several projects for Bihar, with Rs 26,000 crore proposed for several road projects in the state.
Finance minister said the government “will formulate plan Purvodaya for all round development of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.”
“On the Amritsar-Kolkata industrial corridor we will support the development of an industrial nod at Gaya in Bihar.It will catalyse the development of the easter region. We will also support the development of road connectivity projects- Patna -Purnea expressway, Buxar- Bhagalpur highway, Bodhgaya- Rajgir-Vaishali- Darbhanga and an additional two-lane bridge over river Ganga in Buxar for Rs 26,000 crores,” she added.
Centre further said that it will also set up airports, medical colleges and sports infrastructure in Bihar, Sitharaman said.
