NEW DELHI: The body of Leading Seaman Sitendra Singh was recovered on Wednesday following extensive diving operations after he went missing during a fire incident aboard the INS Brahmaputra at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, along with all personnel of the Indian Navy, extended their heartfelt condolences to Singh’s family, emphasizing the Navy’s unwavering support.
On July 21, a fire broke out on the INS Brahmaputra, which was undergoing refit at the dockyard.
The crew, alongside firefighters from the dockyard, managed to control the blaze by the morning of July 22.
However, the ship began to list severely, ultimately resting on its side, unable to be righted despite efforts from the crew and rescue teams.
The search for Singh, who was reported missing in the chaos, was initiated immediately, but it took several days before his body was located.
In response to the incident, Admiral Tripathi visited Mumbai on July 23 to review the events leading up to the accident.
He was briefed on the actions taken to mitigate damage to the ship and the ongoing efforts to restore its functionality.
The Admiral directed that all necessary steps be taken to ensure the INS Brahmaputra is made seaworthy and combat-ready as soon as possible.
In his interactions with the crew, he urged them to embody the spirit of the Indian Navy and work diligently towards the ship’s operational readiness
