NEW DELHI: UK foreign secretary David Lammy pushed for a reset in bilateral ties, including through the commitment to secure an early conclusion of the free trade agreement (FTA), as he called on Prime minister Narendra Modi and held talks with his counterpart S Jaishankar during what was the first ministerial visit to India by the newly-elected Labour govt.
After meeting Lammy, Modi said in a post on X he appreciated the priority accorded by UK PM Keir Starmer to broaden and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, while endorsing the desire for a mutually beneficial FTA.
“Remain committed to elevating the ties. Welcome the bilateral technology security initiative and desire to conclude a mutually beneficial FTA,” Modi said.
In a significant takeaway, the two sides launched a technology security initiative (TSI), along the lines of India-US iCET, to further elevate the strategic partnership by strengthening cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, quantum and telecoms.
