BENGALURU: Three days after 24-year-old Kriti Kumari was fatally attacked in her PG accommodation in Koramangala, police “secured” the suspect, Abhishek. He was being brought to the city Friday, where he will be produced before a local court after a formal arrest.
At least four officers independently confirmed late Friday evening that he was “secured” from outside of Karnataka. TOI had reported earlier that police had dispatched multiple teams to Madhya Pradesh as part of the manhunt for the suspect, but none of the officers confirmed if he was indeed picked up from that state.
Earlier in the day, chilling CCTV footage obtained by investigators revealed the horrific sequence of events. Abhishek was captured on camera arriving on the third floor of the building around 11.14pm Tuesday. Carrying a knife concealed in a plastic bag, he knocked on Kumari’s door. What followed was an 18-second encounter inside the room before both individuals emerged into the corridor.
The video shows how Kumari struggled to defend herself. Despite her attempts to push him away and disarm him, the assailant overpowered her, inflicting multiple stab wounds on her. The attacker slit Kumari’s throat three times before fleeing around 11.15pm. Witnesses said three women from the fourth floor found the victim gravely injured and the attacker fleeing. Kumari collapsed about 90 seconds later.
While initial reports suggested the attack might have been motivated by Kumari’s alleged interference in a matter between the suspect and his girlfriend (Kumari’s roommate), police said the exact motive remained unclear.
