LUCKNOW: Amid several reports of kanwariyas engaging in vandalism and hooliganism, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday called for “self-discipline” among the pilgrims, saying “we must be devoted not only internally but also externally”.
“Shivo bhutva Shivam yajet (to worship Shiva, first become Shiva)”, Yogi said in his missive on the second Monday of Shrawan month, during which the kanwar yatra takes place.
The CM said that both central and state governments had made elaborate arrangements to ensure a smooth kanwar yatra.
“But, to ensure a smooth and safe journey, it was important to first practise self-discipline without which no festival, celebration or ‘sadhana’ can be complete,” he further added.
Yogi said government had taken extensive measures to facilitate the yatra, including enhanced patrolling, ensuring cleanliness and organising health camps. It had also made arrangements for showering flowers on the kanwariyas using drones and helicopters, he pointed out, adding that various sections of society were also working diligently to support kanwar yatris.
Extending his wishes to the people, the CM said those devoted to Lord Shiva had been blessed by Mahadev’s boundless grace, and prayed for His blessings to continue forever.
“The kanwar yatra during the Shrawan month is renowned worldwide. During this period, Shiva devotees from across the country, including north India, engage deeply in the rituals of Mahadev, showing their devotion by performing jalabhishek at Shiva temples,” he said, urging devotees to make the yatra a smooth affair by maintaining piety.
The kanwar yatra began on July 22 and will conclude on August 6.
