Apple is reportedly planning to make Pro and Pro Max models of the upcoming iPhone 16 series in India through its partner Foxconn. According to a report in MoneyControl, quoting sources familiar with the matter, the iPhone-maker plans to have India-assembled iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models available in the country shortly after the global launch, which is likely happening in September.
Foxconn’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, will soon begin the ‘new product introduction’ (NPI) process for these high-end models reports MoneyControl, with mass production commencing post-launch.
The report suggests that while initial availability may rely on imported units, Apple plans to make India-made Pro models available by the end of this year.
The move comes as Apple anticipates high demand for its iPhone 16 series, with plans to prepare 90 million units for 2024 alone – a 10 percent increase from the iPhone 15 series production.
Apple’s expansion in India is part of a broader push to reduce dependence on China. Last year, made in India iPhone 15 units were available to Indian customers on the first day of global sales, and later also exported the India-made units to foreign countries.
The company aims to manufacture a quarter of all its iPhones in India over the next 3-4 years, up from the current 14 percent. In the fiscal year 2024, Apple assembled $14 billion worth of iPhones in India, as revealed in the recent Economic Survey 2023-2024.
Beyond iPhones, Apple is also considering expanding its Indian manufacturing operations to include other products. The company is reportedly planning to start production of AirPods in India early next year and is exploring the possibility of manufacturing iPads in the country through Foxconn.
