NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath‘s bid to take digs at Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav over his past differences with his nephew Akhilesh Yadav led to an interesting change of barbs with Samajwadi Party leaders responding with sharp counterattacks.
It all started with Yogi Adityanath congratulating Samajwadi Party leader Mata Prasad Pandey on being appointed the new leader of opposition in Uttar Pradesh assembly. After congratulating Mata Prasad, Yogi Adityanath went on to take a veiled jibe at Shivpal Yadav, popularly referred as ‘chacha’, on being sidelined for the role by his nephew Akhilesh.
“I congratulate you for your selection as the LoP… ‘Ek alag vishay hai ki aapne Chacha ko gaccha de hi diya’ (It is a different subject that you have fooled the uncle). ‘Chacha bechara hamesha hi aise maar khata hai. Unki niyati hi aisi hai. (The uncle always gets beaten up like this. Such is his fate). Kyuki bhatija hamesha bhaybheet rehta hai. (because the nephew is always scared),” CM Yogi said pointing at the past family feud between the uncle and nephew.
The chief minister was taking swipe at the differences between Akhilesh and Shivpal after the death of former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. The uncle-nephew fell out over “control of the party” and their rift made headlines. Eventually, Akhilesh got full control of the party and Shivpal quit to form his own party. However, later the two sorted the differences and Shivpal returned to the party fold.
Shivpal, who was listening to Adityanath’s barbs directed at him, choose not to respond immediately. However, when he did, his response was sharp and pointed to the reported differences within the state unit of the BJP after the party’s shock reverses in Lok Sabha elections.
“Hamai gaccha nhi mila hai. For three years I was in touch with you, so you have also betrayed me. Mata Prasad is a very senior leader. We are the Samajwadi Party. Abhi Lok Sabha elections mai Samajwadi Party ne aapko ‘gaccha’ diya hai and has gone ahead of the BJP. I am saying it now that the Samajwadi Party will come to power in 2027,” Shivapal Yadav said.
The senior SP leader then went on to take potshots at Yogi Adityanath over the reported differences between him and his deputy chief ministers and said: “I want to tell the chief minister that your deputy CM will cheat you again in 2027.”
Later, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also hit back at Yogi Adityanath and said that “UP CM Yogi ne Delhi ko gaccha diya hai (Yogi has fooled Delhi).”
“Maine dhoka nhi diya, unhone Delhi ko dhokha diya hai (I have not fooled anyone, they fooled). Unhone (Yogi) Delhi ko gaccha diya,” the SP chief said.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP suffered major reverses as the ruling party could win only 33 seats and was reduced to nearly half of its 2019 tally of 61 Lok Sabha seats.
