WASHINGTON: Kamala is blooming in the US and it’s driving the MAGA crowd crazy.
A glowing New York magazine cover story titled Welcome to Kamalot, a play on the legendary castle and court called Camelot associated with King Arthur (and more recently with the Kennedy White House), has riled MAGA folk who believe such “Kamalove” from the “liberal media” is undeserved.
The cover, showing Kamala Harris sitting on top of a coconut surrounded by Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama and other party grandees, details how the Democratic Party discovered its future was sitting in the White House all along as it looked for an alternative to Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election.
“Since we sent our last issue to the printer, Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt, JD Vance joined his ticket, the Republicans crowed all week in Milwaukee about their impending victory, Joe Biden got Covid, his closest Democratic peers forced him out of the race, and Kamala Harris — with astonishing speed — wrapped up the race to succeed him,” New York’s editor-in-chief David Haskell wrote in the cover intro.
Indeed, the dizzying speed with which the whole race has turned around (for now), with Kamala Harris now leading in several polls (for now) has panicked Trump Republicans who are now looking for new lines of attack against the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Efforts to ridicule “Kamalaugh” has not worked, with supporters turning her hearty laughter into a positive trait against an opponent who they say jeers, sneers, and snickers, but never laughs.
Democrats meanwhile are hoping Kamala can keep the momentum from what some pundits are calling a “Harris honeymoon” phase.
“The 60’s brought us Camelot and turned America’s vision to the future, in 2024 we’ll do the same with Kamalot when we win this election,” a Kamala supporter wrote on X even as MAGA strategists pored over Kamala Sutra — her past policy prescriptions — to discover chinks.
Camelot is also a synonym for an idyllic time of happiness, so some of her supporters are also plying merchandize emblazoned with “Make America Love Again” and “Make America Laugh Again” — playing on the “MALA” in her name.
But MAGA Republicans see a dystopian future in Kamalot where borders are thrown open to illegal immigrants, the second amendment right to bear arms are curtailed, abortion is rampant leading to low birth rates, and a “woke virus” will destroy families in America.
One Trump supporter rebranded Kamalot as “Commie-lot,” in a meme showing Kamala Harris dressed in a Mao suit, hewing to the former President attacking her as a “socialist” and a “marxist.”
Among other epithets, Trump has also called her “crazy” “nuts” “dumb as a rock’ and a “low IQ individual.”
Taking a cue from Trump, John Kennedy, a Republican Senator called her a “ding dong” candidate from the “loon wing of the Democratic Party” who is “just like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez without the bartending experience.” AOC is a Latina congresswoman from New York who once worked as a bartender.
But if anything, polls are indicating such attacks are putting off younger voters, minorities, and suburban women whose support is vital for both sides to win. A new poll released over the weekend showed Harris leading 56-25 among non-white voters and 50-32 among voters below 35. Trump has a 51-37 lead among while voters, and a 49-40 lead among voters over 55.
