NEW DELHI: Amid signs of a renewed effort by India and China to resolve the military standoff in eastern Ladakh, India and China held another round of diplomatic talks for an early completion of the disengagement process that India sees as essential for resuming normal bilateral exchanges.
While there was no breakthrough in the talks as the situation at Demchok and Depsang, the two remaining frictions points, remains the same, India said in a statement the discussion was in-depth, constructive and forward-looking.Both sides also agreed to maintain the “momentum” through the established diplomatic and military channels.
The talks followed two meetings in a span of three weeks last month between foreign minister S Jaishankar and his counterpart Wang Yi in which they agreed to work with a sense of purpose for full disengagement. In their last meeting in Vientiane, Jaishankar and Wang also agreed on the need for “strong guidance” to achieve the same.
Further to discussions between the two foreign ministers in their recent meetings, according to the Indian readout, the two sides reviewed the current situation along the LAC with a view to finding an early resolution of the outstanding issues.
They two sides agreed on the need to jointly uphold peace and tranquility on the ground in the border areas in accordance with relevant bilateral agreements, protocols and understandings reached between the two govts.
While this was overall the 30th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC), it was the 16th such meeting since the latest border standoff erupted in May 2020.
