‘Initially, I was … ‘: Father of Shubhanshu Shukla, set for space mission, on his son’s career choice | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Indian Air Force wing commander Shubhanshu Shukla‘s father Shambhu Dayal Sukhla beamed with delight as he wished his son success in the upcoming space mission while also sharing that he initially wanted him to join civil services.
Shubhanshu Shukla has been selected as the “prime astronaut” for the first collaborative mission with US space agency Nasa to the International Space Station (ISS).
The wing commander’s father said he was unaware of Shubhanshu’s selection, adding that “nothing could match the moment when PM gave him the badge”.
“I wish this mission to be successful. I always pray to God that he (Shubhanshu) gets success. Initially, I was resistant towards services in force and it was my wish that he would join civil service, but when he got selected and I was unaware of it, I didn’t deny then. When we got the news, nothing could match the moment and when the PM gave him the badge, we will never forget that moment. We never think negatively; it’s all God’s wish and everything happens for good,” Shubhanshu’s father told news agency ANI.
Usha Shukla, Shubhanshu’s mother, said he has been brilliant since his childhood days.
“We are so happy that it has no limits. But, there is some nervousness as well when we listen to things about the mission. Yesterday, he left for the US, where he will get the training. All in the family are happy. He has been brilliant since his childhood days and does hard work,” Usha Shukla said.
More than a year after PM Modi said during a visit to the US that an Indian astronaut would travel to the International Space Station as part of a US mission, Isro on Friday announced wing commander Shubhanshu Shukla as part of a space flight agreement with Axiom Space, a Nasa-identified service provider.
Isro’s Human Space Flight Centre has recommended that Shukla be the prime mission pilot and Group Capt Prashanth Nair a backup.
Final approval will be given by the multilateral crew operations panel. Shukla and Nair are among the four astronauts-designate selected for India’s Gaganyaan mission, to send astronauts to space.
Indian astronaut-designates Shubhanshu Shukla and Prashanth Nair will begin training for the flight to the International Space Station in the first week of Aug 2024, Isro said. The agreement with Axiom Space is for the upcoming Axiom-4 mission to the ISS.
