NEW DELHI: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti alleged that she was placed under house arrest on the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Mufti said that the party office had been locked amid heightened security measures. “I have been placed under house arrest while the PDP office has been locked,” she told news agency PTI.
Similarly, PTI citing official sources said that the office of Apni Party, led by Altaf Bukhari, was also closed for the day as a precaution.
Tanvir Sadiq, chief spokesman for the National Conference, claimed that he, too, was placed under house arrest. He expressed his frustration on X, saying, “I have been detained at home, which was completely unnecessary. I needed to leave for some work, but policemen outside my gate prevented me from doing so. This is unwarranted and illegal.” Sadiq also shared a photo of police personnel stationed outside his residence in the Hassanabad area of the city.
Reflecting on the significance of the date, Sadiq said, “August 5 is and will always remain unconstitutional and illegal. On August 5, 2019, the BJP betrayed the people of Jammu and Kashmir. By ignoring the Constitution, the BJP undermined the constitutional, moral, ethical, and legal relationship with J&K.”
The abrogation of Article 370 by the Centre on August 5, 2019, effectively revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and led to the creation of two union territories: Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, through the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act.
Sajad Gani Lone, president of the People’s Conference, remarked that August 5 would forever symbolize “complete disempowerment of Kashmiri people.” He wrote on X, “August 5 will always be an ugly reminder of the complete disempowerment of the Kashmiri people. Five years on, there is no elected Assembly, and the locals have no say in running their own affairs. And sadly there aren’t enough powerful voices in the country to seek questions as to why J and K has been selectively targeted for such humiliating existence.”
