US presidential election: Kamala Harris narrows down VP pick choices to 2 – Times of India



Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday narrowed her running mate choice down to two ahead of her big announcement, now she will be deciding between Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota governor Tim Walz, Reuters reported.
The Democratic presidential candidate is expected to announce her choice for a running mate by Tuesday, before her first public appearance with the vice-presidential nominee in Philadelphia.The duo will then embark on a tour across several key battleground states, which are likely to influence the election outcome.
Harris’s shortlisted candidates
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, 60, has emerged as a potential running mate for Harris. Walz, a former high school teacher and National Guard member, has been actively supporting Harris and appearing on prominent news networks. A standout moment occurred when he attended a St. Paul event wearing a grey T-shirt and camouflage hat, which quickly went viral.
While Walz has not confirmed receiving vetting materials from Harris’s team, he expresses gratitude for being considered. Political analyst David Schultz points out that Walz’s emergence as a candidate is unexpected, considering his previously low-key profile.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is another top candidate for Harris’s vice-presidential selection, owing to his impressive performance and high approval ratings. At the age of 51, Shapiro has held various significant positions, including state representative, Montgomery County Board Chair, Attorney General, and currently, Governor.
Harris had earlier wrapped up her search on Sunday by interviewing three leading candidates—Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, US Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro—at her official residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington.
