A viral video on social media showed a man with a bag on his head. When inquired, he said it contained Sheikh Hasina’s saree. The man doubled down on his remarks and claimed that he would give the sarees to his wife, and make her the PM.
“I am going to make my wife the PM,” he said.
As Hasina fled the country, her palace was raided by hundreds of protestors. Social media was flooded with videos of protestors making their way through the palace, taking whatever they could find with them.
Videos showed the protestors stealing utensils, and rugs and rummaging through the drawers in Hasina’s offices. Another clip showed a few raiding the kitchen and feasting on what seemed like biryani in the former PM’s palace.
Hasina landed near Delhi later in the evening and will reportedly travel to London. Hasina departed the country abruptly, a mere seven months after securing her fourth consecutive term and fifth overall in the January national elections. At 76 years old, Hasina was transported via military helicopter alongside her sister, seeking asylum in India, according to media reports.
During her most recent 15-year tenure, Hasina’s administration faced criticism for its treatment of opposition leaders, including their arrests, as well as the suppression of dissent and limitations on free speech. Her resignation came amidst deadly student-led protests that have claimed the lives of hundreds of individuals.
