NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday gave the first official confirmation of Sheikh Hasina‘s presence in India and gave details of the circumstances under which the former Bangladesh prime minister was allowed to come at short notice after she resigned on Monday following massive protests and violence.
“On August 4, attack on police – including police stations and govt installations intensified even as overall level of violence increased.Properties of individuals associated with the regime and minorities were targeted. On August 5, demonstrators converged in Dhaka despite curfew. Our understanding is that Sheikh Hasina apparently made the decision to resign following a meeting with the security officials,” Jaishankar informed Rajya Sabha.

“At very short notice Sheikh Hasina requested approval to come for the “moment” to India. We simultaneously received request for flight clearance from authorities in Bangladesh,” he added.
Jaishankar made the suo motu statement to apprise the Upper House of the developments in Bangladesh and sought the support of all parties.
Sheikh Hasina’s aircraft landed at Hindon airbase near Delhi on Monday evening after fleeing Bangladesh following widespread protests against her government. Hasina arrived in India in a C-130J military transport aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force.
She has been shifted to an unspecified location under tight security.
Her resignation was announced by Bangladesh army chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman who also announced the formation of an interim government. “I’m taking all responsibility (of the country). Please cooperate,” he said in a televised address.
The Bangladesh Army chief also said he had met political leaders and told them the Army would take over responsibility for law and order.
